Consumer and Retail Sector
Extreme heat and drought across Europe threaten crop yields, pushing up wholesale food costs and retail olive oil prices.
Persistent extreme heat, drought, and wildfires across Europe are damaging agricultural yields, driving up production costs that directly impact retail grocery pricing. Spain's ministry of agriculture projects its 2026-27 cereal harvest will drop to little more than 18.5m tonnes from 24m tonnes last year, while Champagne grape yields are expected to shrink 10%. This continues the squeeze on European food supply chains and grocers reported on August 2. Higher procurement expenses and water stress force producers to raise wholesale prices, leaving brands like Filippo Berio and importer Eurostar Commodities facing supply shortages. While Italy forecasts a rise in flour wheat yields and Romania expects maize output versus the prior year, no source reported a dissenting view against overall upward price pressure. This inflation narrative would be challenged if Spanish cereal output reaches 24m tonnes or if UK extra virgin olive oil store prices fall below £7 per litre.
