UK manufacturing output expanded at its fastest pace in two years despite PMI slipping to 51.9 in July.

UK manufacturing output surges while factory hiring stalls on energy fears

Accelerating demand from export markets in the US, EU, and China drove UK factory output to its fastest growth rate in nearly two years, extending production expansion to a fourth consecutive month. However, building backlogs of work failed to spur job growth, as manufacturers instituted a hiring moratorium over rising Middle East energy costs. July's manufacturing PMI slipped to 51.9 from 52.5 in June, reflecting heightened cost anxiety even as total new business expanded for an eighth straight month. Overseas customers in North America and Asia face extended supplier lead times while UK plants run near capacity without adding headcount. Industry analysts disagree on the sector's trajectory: S&P Global's Rob Dobson argues mounting backlogs will compel factories to resume hiring, whereas Item Club's Matt Swannell forecasts a severe second-half slowdown as surging oil and gas prices erode end-market demand. This expansionary outlook would be falsified if total new order intake contracts below the neutral mark in August.

L3Harris closes $845 million commercial space unit majority stake sale

L3Harris Technologies completed the sale of a majority stake in its commercial space propulsion, power, and electronics businesses to private equity firm AE Industrial Partners. The transaction values the carved-out unit at an enterprise value of $845 million. By divesting controlling ownership of commercial components, L3Harris monetizes non-core space assets to reallocate capital toward core defense projects while insulating its balance sheet from commercial aerospace cyclicality. For commercial satellite and launch vessel OEMs, supplier qualification and procurement channels for critical power and propulsion hardware now transfer directly to AE Industrial Partners as the controlling operating partner.
