Industrials and Manufacturing Sector
Industrial and manufacturing activity saw massive capital deployments alongside significant operational recalls. Major investments emerged across aerospace, robotics, and mining, including SpaceX's $100 billion spaceport expansion and a $1.1 billion debt pledge for Ivanhoe Electric's copper project. However, Tesla faced a record recall of nearly three million vehicles in China due to safety concerns over hidden door handles.
Tesla is recalling nearly three million vehicles in China due to safety concerns regarding hidden, electronically controlled door handles that can trap occupants during electrical failures. The massive action forms part of China's largest automotive recall, which affects approximately 4.3 million vehicles across nine manufacturers including Xiaomi, Leapmotor, and XPeng. Regulators noted that emergency mechanical door releases can be difficult to locate and operate following severe collisions when low-voltage systems fail. Tesla's remedy for the 2.98 million affected Model 3, Model Y, Model S, and Model X vehicles includes warning labels and over-the-air software updates that automatically lower windows after a crash. The widespread recalls anticipate new Chinese regulations taking effect in 2027 that will ban flush-mounted door handles and require mechanical releases on both the inside and outside of vehicles.

Tata Consultancy Services has agreed to acquire Porsche AG's IT consulting subsidiary, MHP Management- und IT-Beratung GmbH, for an enterprise value of €320 million alongside a five-year strategic AI partnership valued at €1.25 billion. Through its subsidiary TCS Netherlands B.V., the Indian IT services firm will take 100% ownership of MHP, absorbing its roughly 4,500 employees and establishing a dedicated AI Mobility Centre of Excellence for Porsche. The cash transaction is part of Porsche's 'Sportwagenschmiede 35' strategy to streamline operations and concentrate on its core automotive business under CEO Michael Leiters. For TCS, the acquisition expands its European footprint and secures a marquee German automotive client as the sector shifts toward software-defined mobility. MHP generated €742 million in turnover in calendar year 2025, declining from €830 million in 2024 and €828 million in 2023. The acquisition is subject to regulatory approvals and is expected to close within three to four months.
Ivanhoe Electric secured a preliminary project letter from the Export-Import Bank of the United States for $1.1 billion in potential debt financing to develop its Santa Cruz Copper Project in Arizona. The preliminary letter raises potential funding by one-third from an April 2025 letter of interest and marks the completion of the bank's preliminary due diligence. The financing is processed through the federal Make More in America Initiative, which directs public capital toward domestic resource production rather than traditional export credit guarantees. The project is designed to produce 99.99% pure copper cathode over a 23-year lifespan without employing a traditional smelting process. Final board consideration by the bank is anticipated during the spring of 2027.
According to cnbc.com, shares of Qantas Airways jumped 4% on Thursday after the Australian carrier reported full-year earnings and unveiled new business-class suites. International premium cabin revenue grew 15% in fiscal 2026, outpacing economy revenue growth as international travel demand remained strong. The airline reported underlying profit before tax of A$2.06 billion for the year ended June 30, beating Visible Alpha consensus by about 3%. Higher fuel costs weighed on international earnings, but Qantas expects domestic and international unit revenue to rise 8% to 10% in the first half of fiscal 2027. To capture premium demand, Qantas introduced updated business-class seats for its new Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners and new suites featuring lie-flat beds and privacy doors for its Airbus A321XLR fleet. The first of 16 aircraft fitted with these new suites is expected to arrive in 2028. Citi maintained a buy rating on the carrier following the results, pointing to Jetstar and Qantas Loyalty as standout performers.
Alphabet-owned Waymo plans to launch a commercial robotaxi service in Munich toward the end of 2027. The company will begin by manually driving vehicles to map local streets before introducing human safety drivers and eventually opening the service to the public. Waymo is coordinating with Germany's Federal Motor Transport Authority and local officials to secure necessary regulatory approvals. The expansion marks Waymo's third international market following London and Tokyo. The autonomous vehicle developer raised $16 billion earlier this year at a $126 billion valuation.
SpaceX is investing $100 billion to build a second Starship spaceport in Vermilion Parish, Louisiana, concluding a seven-year search for a new launch location. The 125,000-acre site on Pecan Island will serve as the primary launch facility for SpaceX's Starship rocket and support thousands of annual launches for its Starlink and AI satellite networks. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2027, with initial launches targeted for 2029, though state officials project operations to begin in 2030. The project is expected to create 3,000 direct new jobs over ten years alongside up to 30,000 peak construction positions. SpaceX plans to develop the area into a self-sustaining facility featuring propellant production, power generation, vehicle processing, and an airport, while partnering with state agencies on coastal restoration and erosion protection.
