Korea Zinc's $7.23B US Smelter Clears Key Environmental Review

Korea Zinc cleared a major regulatory hurdle for its planned $7.23 billion smelter in Tennessee after the U.S. government issued a finding of no significant impact for Project Crucible. The U.S. Department of War completed the final environmental review under the National Environmental Policy Act on September 11. Project Crucible involves building an integrated nonferrous metal smelting facility in Clarksville to produce zinc, lead, copper, and alongside 11 critical minerals and -grade sulfuric acid. The review examined air quality, greenhouse gas emissions, water resources, biological and cultural resources, waste and hazardous materials, traffic, and socioeconomic impacts. The clearance allows the project to proceed without advancing to a more intensive environmental impact statement process. Four of the 10 disclosed approval steps have been completed so far. The finding also serves as reference material for determining whether the Department of War will provide financial backing and whether the Tennessee Valley Authority will commit to power infrastructure support. The Federal Permitting Improvement Steering Council previously designated Project Crucible as a FAST-41 subject in April, marking the first time a project led by a South Korean company joined the fast-track system for large-scale infrastructure licenses and permits.

Severed Cable Causes Major Delays Across US Airports

bbc.co.uk reports that hundreds of flights were delayed across major US airports on Monday afternoon after construction workers accidentally severed a backup telecommunication cable. The disruption affected facilities in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Massachusetts, including John F Kennedy International Airport, LaGuardia Airport, and Philadelphia International Airport. Newark Liberty International Airport bore the heaviest brunt of the outages, recording 267 delayed departing flights alongside 257 delayed inbound flights according to flight-tracking data. US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy stated that the incident forced the Federal Aviation Administration to issue ground stops before repairs were completed hours later. Transport officials confirmed the cut impacted the Terminal Radar Approach Control system used for guiding takeoffs and landings. NJ Transit stated that its construction workers severed the line after markers were wrongly placed at the digging site, though Duffy initially pointed to Amtrak workers. FAA head Bryan Bedford noted that the failure only surfaced because the primary circuit had already failed, while cable owner Verizon denied any responsibility for the outage.

Tariffs, Fuel Costs, and Interest Rates Pressure US Manufacturers

American manufacturers are facing a severe cost squeeze as , record fuel prices, and higher converge across industrial supply chains. Allen Eden, owner of the 25-person industrial power saw maker Original Saw Co. in Britt, Iowa, noted that a single motor bracket rose from $42 to $87 over the summer, a price increase of more than 100 percent. Middle-market manufacturers are caught between rising steel and aluminum costs and the 's first interest rate increase in three years, which raises short-duration borrowing costs for inventory and equipment. Diesel prices climbed to an unprecedented $6.27 a gallon as the war with Iran restricted tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz and Ukrainian drone strikes prompted Moscow to ban diesel exports. Auto suppliers are feeling acute pressure, with Detroit-area manufacturer Lucerne International suspending U.S. production and scrapping a planned $50 million aluminum forging facility in Michigan. Meanwhile, Spanish auto parts maker Grupo Antolin sought Chapter 15 protection in the U.S. in July due to tariffs, raw-material costs, and supply-chain disruptions. Small businesses and manufacturers will absorb cost increases until the last minute before passing them to retailers like Home Depot.
