Technology Sector
Technology developments saw significant moves across corporate leadership, AI licensing, and market indices. Reddit jumped 11% following its planned inclusion in the S&P 500, while Apple and Suno secured key licensing agreements for news and music content. Meanwhile, OpenAI COO Brad Lightcap exited the firm ahead of its planned public offering, and Google unveiled its latest Pixel 11 hardware.
Apple is negotiating multiyear licensing deals with news publishers to give its upcoming Siri AI assistant real-time access to current events, backed by a proposed nine-figure budget. Unlike the flat annual fees common across the artificial intelligence industry, such as OpenAI's agreement with News Corp or Amazon's arrangement with The New York Times, Apple has proposed a variable compensation model. Partner publishers would be paid on a pay-per-query basis each time their content is actually used to answer a Siri request. This usage-based structure mirrors Apple's engagement-driven mechanics in Apple News+ rather than purchasing static archive access for model training. The talks arrive as publishers navigate a fractured landscape between suing AI developers for unauthorized scraping and striking commercial data agreements. For Apple, the push aims to resolve chronic limitations in Siri's utility by grounding the voice assistant in verified, professionally produced journalism.
Google introduced the Pixel 11 series at its annual hardware event, unveiling four new smartphones priced higher than their predecessors due to rising memory costs. The base Pixel 11 starts at $899, representing a $100 price increase from last year's model, while the Pixel 11 Pro opens at $1,099 and the Pixel 11 Pro XL at $1,299. Google eliminated the 128GB tier entirely, doubling base storage to 256GB across the lineup with 12GB of RAM. All four devices, including the Pixel 11 Pro Fold, run on the new Tensor G6 chip manufactured on TSMC's 2nm process. The updated processor delivers improved power efficiency and powers deeper on-device Gemini AI integration, including expanded live translation and camera-based circle-to-search functions. The slab models are scheduled to ship on August 20, with pre-orders offering promotional discounts.
Suno signed a global strategic alliance with BMG covering the music company's recordings and publishing catalogue as the artificial intelligence music generator prepares to launch a new, label-backed model. The agreement backdates financial benefits to cover Suno's prior use of BMG's repertoire for training data while establishing an opt-in structure for participating artists and songwriters. BMG joins Warner Music Group as Suno's second major music partner, though the startup remains locked in copyright litigation with Universal Music Group and Sony Music Entertainment. To appease rightsholders and stem the flood of platform-generated tracks, Suno recently introduced usage tiers that cap user downloads at seven for free accounts and between 20 and 60 monthly for paid subscribers, alongside new audio watermarking and fingerprinting technology.
